Translating legal documents

Legal texts are the most difficult types of documents to translate, as they require not only fluent language skills but also high-level knowledge of the law.
A high level of accuracy is crucial, as well as a good knowledge of the legal systems of both the source and target languages, applicable to different legal procedures. Translators should focus on word selection and syntax, as a slight paraphrase can change the legal meaning of a document. Indeed, the mistranslation of a passage in a contract could lead to lawsuits and loss of money.
A legal translator must not only master legal jargon but also the rules of linguistics. Legal translation requires a very literal rendition of the source-language legal document. The translator must avoid extra explanatory words or sentences that are not in the original document.
A good legal translator should have a good knowledge of the relevant legal terminology in both the source and target languages and be a specialist in a particular legal area, such as:
• International law
• Civil law,
• Corporate law,
• Property law,
• Tax and accounting law,
• Insurance law,
• Patent law, etc.
